The third artist featured in our “Who Is” series for the Eurovision 2018 season is Aisel from Azerbaijan.
At the beginning of November last year, it was announced that 28-year-old Aisel Mammadova, also known as AISEL, would represent Azerbaijan at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest. Let’s get to know a bit more about her.
Aisel Mammadova was born in July 1989 in the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku. Growing up, she was part of a musical family, and attended the Bulbul School of Music from 1995 to 2006. She also attended the Azerbaijan National Conservatory, a higher music school, until 2010.
She is a jazz and soul singer, and an accomplished vocalist, pianist, and composer. She has performed at festivals such as the Caspian Jazz & Blues Festival (2002), the Baku International Jazz festival (2005 & 2006), the MuzEnergo Festival of Music Improvisation (2007), Montreux Jazz Festival (2009), and the Caucasus Jazz Festival (2012), and is also a member of the Baku Jazz Centre.
AISEL will represent Azerbaijan at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon, Portugal. She was internally selected by Azeri broadcaster ITV, and her song will be revealed in March.
Azerbaijan debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2008, they were represented by Elnur & Samir with the song “Day After Day”, they finished 8th in the final. In 2011 Azerbaijan won the Eurovision Song Contest represented by Ell & Nikki and their song “Running Scared”. The song scored a total of 221 points, receiving only three sets of 12 points from Malta, Russia and Turkey. In the past three years Azerbaijan has failed to reach the top.10 in the final a position that Azerbaijan never placed lower than between 2008 and 2013.
