MRT, the Macedonian national broadcaster, has today announced that it will hold an internal selection for Eurovision 2018.
The broadcaster also made a call for entries with a deadline of 8 February for submissions. Songwriters and music producers from the country and elsewhere are invited to submit their entries in completed or demo form.
Proposals can be submitted by email to firstname.lastname@example.org or at the following address: Macedonian Radio Television, bul. Goce Delchev no. 18, 1000 Skopje, R. Macedonia.
MRT will choose the winner, who will represent FYR Macedonia in Lisbon, by a professional jury who will choose the best proposed performer or group of performers for the Eurovision stage.
There had initially been concerns that FYR Macedonia would be unable to compete in Eurovision 2018 due to outstanding debts to the EBU. The country was absent from the provisional lists of participants which was released in November 2017. However, following talks between MRT and the EBU, it was later confirmed that FYR Macedonia will join the 42 other competing countries in Lisbon.
Last year, Jana Burceska was also internally selected to represent her country in Kyiv. She finished in 15th place in the second semi-final, thus failing to qualify for the Grand Final with her song Dance Alone.
FYR Macedonia in the Eurovision Song Contest
FYR Macedonia has had a string of poor results in recent years failing to reach the final every year since 2012. The country debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1998, however, two years earlier they attempted to participate but was knocked out in the pre-qualifying round. In 2016 they were represented by Kaliopi for a second time with the song “Dona”, she missed out on the final finishing in 11th in her semi-final. FYR Macedonia’s best result to date is a 12th place finish in the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest represented by Elena Risteska and the song “Ninanajna”.
