The Spanish broadcaster TVE and Gestmusic, the company producing Operación Triunfo, have revealed that they have received more than 200 songs for the Spanish national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 2018.
According to Formula TV those reaching for the opportunity to have their song represent Spain at Eurovision include both more well-known names to the Spanish music scene as well as completely new ones.
In addition to following the rules set by the EBU, TVE also required that all the submitted songs were fully in Spanish.
Each composer was also asked to select their favorite candidate to present the song. Some selected their songs to be performed by duos or groups which could leave open the possibility of songs being performed by more than one finalist.
Four singers – Amaia, Miriam, Alfred and Aitana – have already been selected for Operación Triunfo with the final fifth being left for the public to select. The Spanish public has until next Monday to decide and vote for the singer that they want to see make it to the final of Operación Triunfo.
The artists will receive the songs that they will present on the 23rd of January and then be able to work on their performance for about a week.
The final of Operación Triunfo will be held on the 29th of January 2018 at 22:35 CET where the public will select the Spanish entry for Lisbon. The show will be broadcast on TVE 1, TVE International and will be streamed live on rtve.es.
Operación Triunfo was previously used to select the Spanish representative for Eurovision from 2002 to 2004. This proved to be successful, as all three selected artists, Rosa, Beth and Ramón, finished in the top 10 in their respective years. Rosa’s performance at the 2002 contest was watched by 13 million people in Spain, a rating of 80%, which was the most watched moment in history on Spanish television at the time. Soraya Arnelas, the runner-up of the fourth edition of the show, also represented Spain in 2009 with “La noche es para mí”.
