A total of 1050 songs have been sent to SMRTV for the San Marinese Eurovision 2018 national final.
It has been revealed that a total of 1050 songs have been submitted for San Marino’s 2018 Eurovision national final show. 971 of these submissions were sent in video format, and 79 in audio. Only 557 videos were published to the official 1in360 website, and these videos come from 75 different countries around the world.
7 artists that have entered in the selection are from San Marino. These are Alessandra Busignani, Alibi, Anita Simoncini, Fabrizio Valentini, Gianluigi Colucci, Irol and Jimmy JDKA. Junior Eurovision fans may recognise Anita Simoncini as she was part of The Peppermints, who represented San Marino at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2015.
The deadline for submissions was 1st December. This selection will feature up to three selected wildcard acts. The first act will be decided by SMRTV and 1in360, and this act will be from San Marino. The second act will be decided by Eurovision fan clubs such as OGAE, and the third act will be decided by web voting. These three wildcard artists will be announced by 15th December.
Seven remaining spots on the line-up will be decided internally by SMRTV and 1 in 360 out of the hundreds that entered in the competition. In total, ten candidates will be invited to the first of seven live recorded shows, which will be broadcast on the internet and via satellite TV across Europe in January 2018. The final of the San Marino selection will take place in late February. One of the jurors for the selection process will be Zoë Straub who represented Austria in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016.
There are also some familiar names who have entered the selection process including Dado Topic (Croatia, Eurovision 2007 with Dragonfly), Karl William Lund (UK national final 2016), Mahan Moin (Melodifestivalen 2014) and Emma Sandstrom (UMK 2017).
San Marino debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2008 alongside Azerbaijan. On their debut they were represented by Miodio and the song “Complice”, and finished last in their semi final with just 5 points. San Marino withdrew from the contest before returning again in 2011. Since then the country has participated annually and in 2014 qualified for their first final. In 2017, Valentina Monetta represented San Marino for the fourth time alongside Jimmie Wilson with “Spirit of the Night.” The pair finished last in their semi-final with just 1 point.
