TRM, the Moldovan national broadcaster, has revealed that their national final for Eurovision 2018 will be held on February 24.

O Melodie pentru Europa will be held to select the Moldovan participant for Lisbon. The submission period is open from today until January 15 at 16:00 CET. Songs must not exceed three minutes in length and must not be entered into any other country’s national selection for Eurovision 2018. Foreign artists may participate in the selection, as long as they do not exceed 50% of the act on stage.

A jury of between 5 and 11 members will select 35 songs to proceed to the live auditions.  The jury members will be revealed to the public during the semi-final on February 22. From the auditionees, 16 will be selected for the semi-final. Ten songs will then make it through to the final on February 24. In both the semi-final and final, the decision will be made by 50% jury voting and 50% public voting. Viewers will only be allowed to vote from one phone number one song at a time.

Moldova’s appearance at the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest was their most successful to date. Sunstroke Project took to the stage in Kyiv with their song “Hey Mamma”, placing third overall with a total of 374 points. The trio were even awarded state honours back home in Moldova for their excellent result. Moldova’s previous best result came on their debut 12 years ago when the contest was last held in Kyiv, Ukraine. Zdob şi Zdub finished 6th in the final with the song “Bunica Bate Toba”. It was also Moldova’s first top 10 placing since 2007, when Natalia Barbu finished 10th in the final with “Fight”.

Moldova in the Eurovision Song Contest

Moldova debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2005 when the contest was last held in Kyiv, Ukraine. In 2005 Moldova debuted in the contest alongside Bulgaria, while that year Hungary also returned to the contest having been absent since 1998. Moldova was in its worse run of results in their history in the contest, having failed to make the final since 2013. At the 2016 contest in Stockholm, the country finished 17th in their semi-final scoring a total of 33 points.
