San Marino were represented by Valentina Monetta and Jimmie Wilson at the second semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv, Ukraine, they finished last in their semi-final scoring just 1 point. For a third year running San Marino has failed to reach the final, meaning 2014 remains the only year that the small nation has made the final.
Before the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kyiv, the Director General of San Marino RTV stated that the organisers of the contest favours the Big Five and larger nations, while it overlooks smaller nations such as San Marino. Mr Romeo has made comments suggesting that San Marino may withdraw from the contest in the past including after last years contest in Stockholm, Sweden.
Over the past 15 years three micro states have participated in the Eurovision Song Contest, with San Marino the only nation still in the contest. Between 2004 and 2006 Monaco participated in the contest, however participation was funded by the Government directly and not the television station. While Andorra competed between 2004 and 2009 before withdrawing due to the cost of participation and failure to qualify for the final.
