Details of the 2018 edition of Vidbir, Ukraine’s Eurovision selection show, have emerged on Twitter. These details include dates for the shows and the announcement of a new music producer.
Ukrainian broadcaster STB has made two announcements regarding the organisation of Vidbir 2018. The first announcement revealed that Ruslan Kvinta has been appointed as the show’s ‘music producer’. Ruslan, a famous Ukrainian composer, will be responsible for selecting all of the entries for the show. Speaking to STB about his new position with the show, Ruslan made the following statement:
I have been in show business for 20 years, 10 of them have been watching this contest closely, I once had a relationship with it as a composer. And it is very interesting for me to take part in the selection of a representative from Ukraine already as a music producer. There is a certain experience that I want to share with artists. Especially today, (as) the Ukrainian music industry has made tremendous progress; there are a lot of interesting young names – singers, collectives, authors who can very adequately represent us outside the country. Ukrainian music is the most beautiful in the world.
Ruslan added that he is interested in hearing a variety of genres, but added that he
I really like it when artists combine folk instruments and modern arrangements in their music, when interesting collaborations are created when the repertoire is saturated with our culture. But at this National selection I want to see the most talented Ukrainian artists working in different musical genres. And necessarily those who are ready to participate in the contest, and not just want to make themselves known. It’s not enough to bring a song from your repertoire. “Eurovision” is a very serious competition, requiring some preparation; there are no random variants and victories.
Konstantin Meladze, the music producer who has been involved in previous years, has plans regarding his own projects, and so he won’t be fully involved this year.
The dates for Vidbir 2018 will be as follows:
- Semi-final 1 – 10th February 2018
- Semi-final 2 – 18th February 2018
- Final – 24th February 2018
