RTP has been working hard on the organization of Lisbon 2018 Eurovision Song Contest since Salvador Sobral won in Kiev last May. The Contest will take place the next 8th, 10th and 12th of May in Lisbon’s MEO Arena in “Parque das Nações” (with a capacity of up to 20.000). The drawing for the semi-finals is expected to take place in January 2018. During the event, the official visual identity of the 63rd edition is expected to be revealed also.
Although the official slogan and visual identity have not been revealed yet, the promotional video released during the announcement of Lisbon as the host city can give us a slight idea of what can be expected. “500 years connected to the oceans”, “Lisbon, city of convergence” and “A bridge between Europe and the World” are some of the slogans used on this first promotional video. Although neither of this has been confirmed as the official slogan, Lisbon 2018 seeks to be a reflection of the country’s history. The nation influence overseas through different trade routes linked Lisbon to the rest of the Europe and the World. The ocean as a symbol gives the idea that everything and everyone is connected to Lisbon.
Although the number of participants is expected to reach more than 40, to date only 27 countries have confirmed or expressed their interest in taking part in Lisbon 2018. This includes the return of Russia after a one-year absence and the interest of Kosovo’s RTK to debut in the contest. Up to six countries have already announced the dates for their own national finals.
According to Gonçalo Reis, CEO of the Portuguese broadcaster, the 63rd edition of Europe’s favourite show will be
“The most economical, but also the most creative edition ever”.
The initial project expects RTP, Lisbon’s City Council, the Tourism Chamber of Lisbon and “Turismo de Portugal” to cover the main costs of the event. This last entity has already made public that the revenue provided by the 1€ Tourist tax implemented back in January 2016, will be used to cover costs.
The city of Lisbon is expected to generate a profit of at least 25 million Euros and the visit of more than 27,000 fans during the Eurovision weeks.
The estimated cost of the 63rd edition of the Eurovision Song Contest is expected to fall around 20 million Euros (like Malmö 2013, one of the most economic contests of modern times).
The initial project shows the entire city of Lisbon getting involved with the Eurovision Song Contest. It has been confirmed by the public broadcaster that the popular “Praça do Comércio” will host the Eurovillage from the 29th of April until the 13th of May. During the two weeks, the centric square is expected to be the home of concerts, activities, bars and a meeting point for everybody. This popular spot once was the main point of entry to the city and to the continent by all boats arriving from all corners of the world.
“Rua Augusta”, one of the main streets of the old town will potentially host the opening ceremony and red carpet. And the Euroclub could be placed nearby on the estuary of the Tagus river.
Several weeks ago, the Secretary of State for Energy, Mr. Jorge Seguro, suggested to the organizing team to make a sustainable Eurovision with renewable energies. RTP’s own Photovoltaic Park of 900 panels could be used to generate solar energy to cover the energy expenditure of Lisbon 2018. This energy will also be used to provide the city during the Eurovision week. Making it one of the greenest contests ever.
As reported by our colleagues at Eurovision-spain.com, several names seem to be on the table at the moment to host the contest. Eurovision commentator Pedro Granger and Eurovision 2014 participant Suzy, have already expressed their interest in being involved in the contest. But the names of Catarina Furtado, Silvia Alberto and Filomena Cautela seem to be RTP’s favorites. The three presenters are directly connected to Eurovision in several ways and have plenty of experience presenting shows for the public broadcaster.
As in other editions, ticket information and availability will be made public by Eurovision’s official channels during the last quarter of 2017. Press tickets and fan organization tickets are expected to be confirmed also by the end of the year.
