Malta has selected Gianluca Cilia to represent them in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Tblisi.
Ten singers competed in Malta Junior Eurovision, which was presented by Francesca Zarb who is the presenter of Iz-Zona on TVM and was Malta’s spokeperson at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2010. Tonight’s selection saw the singers performing a cover of a well-known song. The public then selected the singer to represent Malta in Tbilisi.
The ten competing singers were:
- Rianne Demicoli – Satelite
- Demi Galea – Breathing Underwater
- Aidan Jay Drakard – Mad World
- Kylie Meilak – I Believe – Fantasia
- Gianluca Cilia – Perdere l’amore – Winner
- Veronica Rotin – And I Am Telling You
- Riona Degiorgio – True Colors
- Kira Copperstone – The Voice Within
- Jahel Cardona – One Night Only
- Thea Aquilina – This is a Man’s World
In contrast to previous years, there was no jury vote and 100% televote decided the winner. Third place went to Rianne Demicoli and second place went to Veronica Rotin. While the votes were being counted, there were performances from four former Junior Eurovision participants including Gaia Cauchi (2013 Winner) and Destiny Chukunyere (2015 Winner).
Tonight’s show was used solely to select the representative for Tblisi. Gianluca’s entry for the Junior Eurovision will be selected at a later date. A total of eighty-four young singers applied to represent Malta at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2017, of which twenty were shortlisted. A jury selected ten singers from the shortlist to go through to the live national final. TVM had previously announced that the Maltese singer would be selected behind closed doors with no public involvement.
