Ukraine: Hosting Eurovision Spurs Construction of New Arena

Kyiv, the Ukrainian Capital, will have a new multi-purpose Arena following the city hosting the Eurovision Song Contest 2017.

The Mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko revealed plans for a new multi-purpose Arena for the Ukrainian Capital yesterday. The Mayor stated that discussions about the construction of the new arena came during the city hosting the Eurovision Song Contest and a realisation that the city requires a venue capable of attracting sporting and cultural events to the city.

The proposed arena will be built on a 1.5 hectare site and have a capacity of between 4,500 and 8,000 people. It will host events such asย football and basketball games, athletic events, concerts and exhibitions. Construction of the arena will begin in 10 months time, with the cost of the venue set at 270 Million Hryvnia (9 Million Euro).

During the bidding process for the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 it became clear that Kyiv lacked a modern and purpose-built venue suitable for hosting the competition. Originally the city had planned to host the contest at the Palace of Sports which hosted Eurovision 2005, however the venue was deemed both out of date but also unavailable to host the competition. As a result Kyiv proposed the International Exhibition Centre, with local officials at the time stating it was the only venue that met the technical requirements laid out by the European Broadcasting Union and did not require the construction of a new roof to be capable of hosting.
