The Director General of the Ukrainian Broadcaster has revealed that its 15 Million Euro Guarantee to the EBU has been frozen in a Swiss bank account.
According to the minutes of a meeting at the broadcaster, the financial guarantee provided by Ukraine in the event they were unable to host Eurovision 2017, has been frozen in Geneva due to a lawsuit. The Director General did not reveal who the lawsuit is with, however stated that it is in regards to the broadcaster owing money for the use of the Euronews services. Ukrainian Authorities according to the minutes do not wish to participate in the legal support needed to return the funds to the Ukrainian Government.
The European Broadcasting Union requested that the Ukrainian Authorities provide a financial guarantee in the event that they were unable to host the competition. The 15 Million Euros requested was held in a Swiss bank account and did not need to be used. It is the first time that the European Broadcasting Union has called for a financial guarantee from a host broadcaster of the Eurovision Song Contest.
Salvador Sobral won the 62nd edition of the Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv, Ukraine for Portugal. The 27-year-old singer from Lisbon won the hearts of Europe in May performing “Amar Pelos Dois” (Love for two), which was written by his sister.
