Despite announcing their intention to compete last September, RIK is yet to decide on whether to take part in Junior Eurovision 2017.
Cyprus’ earlier statement of intent to compete in the contest came in late September 2016 during a press conference presenting the broadcasters plans for 2017. At the time Mr. Thanasis Tsokos, Chairman of the RIK board stated,
In 2017 Cyprus will take part in the Eurovision and Junior Eurovision contests, two major competitions, highlighting our country internationally.
RIK has now confirmed to INFE Greece that they have not yet taken a decision on whether they will be participating in this years competition. Cyprus joins Bulgaria as two countries who had previously confirmed their participation, but are now yet to decide as to whether they will be competing in Tbilisi, Georgia.
Cyprus participated in last years Junior Eurovision Song Contest in Malta, represented by George Michaelides with the song “Dance Floor!”. He finished 16th in the final scoring 27 points, the worst result to date for the country in the competition. The highest points award to Cyprus came in the form of 8 points from the Serbian Adult Jury.
The 15th edition of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest later this year in Tbilisi, Georgia. The contest is to be held at the Tbilisi Sports Palace on November 26. It is the first time that the three-time winners of the contest have hosted Junior Eurovision.
Changes have been made to the rules of this years contest. The amount of a song that can be performed in English has been increased to 40% of the lyrics. While the number of voices on the backing track has been increased from five to six singers.

Cyprus participated in the first Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2003 where they were represented by Theodora Rafti, she finished 14 with just 16 points. The countries best result came in 2004 when Marios Tofi finished 8th with the song “Oniera” scoring a total of 61 points. In 2008 Cyprus hosted the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, on home soil they were represented by Elena Mannouri & Charis Saava they finished 10th with 46 points.
