The first city to be hosting at least one of next years Melodifestivalen shows has been revealed as Karlstad.
Karlstad has approved funding to host one of the shows for Melodifestivalen 2018, the Swedish selection process for Eurovision 2018. The city has paid SVT, 600,000 SEK (619,000 Euro) to host the event and promote Karlstad as an “event city”. This will be the first time in five years that Melodifestivalen has traveled to Karlstad.
The show will be hosted at the Löfbergs Arena which was completed in 2001. The arena has a capacity for over 10,000 people during concerts. This will be the fourth time that the Arena has hosted Melodifestivalen following on from 2004, 2006 and 2013.
Melodifestivalen traditionally travels around Sweden during the Heats and Andra Chansen before traveling to the Capital, Stockholm for the final. Since 2013 the Friends Arena has hosted the final, before 2013 the Globen was used as the venue.
The full list of cities that will host next years competition is expected to be revealed in mid-September, this follows a summer of negotiations between SVT and multiple cities across the country. In 2017 the following cities hosted the competition:
- Gothenburg – Semi-Final One
- Malmö – Semi-Final Two
- Växjö – Semi-Final Three
- Skellefteå – Semi-Final Four
- Linköping – Andra Chansen
- Stockholm – Final
Robin Bengtsson represented Sweden at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv, Ukraine, with his song “I Can’t Go On”. He finished fifth in the final scoring a total of 344 points, the song finished third with the juries scoring 218 points, but eighth with the public scoring 126 points.

Sweden debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1958 and has gone on to be one of the contest’s most successful countries. The country has won the contest six times, the most recent being in 2015. Sweden’s first victory came in 1974 when ABBA won the contest in Brighton with “Waterloo”. Since missing out on the final in 2010, Sweden has gone on to finish 3rd twice and has won the contest twice, only in 2013 did the country place outside of the top 10 in the final.
