Bulgaria: Final Decision on Participation in Junior Eurovision 2017 Yet To Be Taken

Bulgaria the host country of Junior Eurovision 2015 currently has yet to decide on whether they will participate in Junior Eurovision 2017.

BNT are still looking at whether they will participate with a decision to be taken by the governing body of the national broadcaster in the coming months. The Bulgarian broadcasters official Twitter said last night that:

We’ve not given up (on the contest), though. JESC is an important project for us, but it’s not like we have many ideas how to keep it up going.

A Bulgarian withdrawal from the Junior Eurovision Song Contest would be a knock for the contest, as just two years ago the country hosted the competition in Sofia. Bulgaria returned to the contest in 2014 and went on to finish 2nd, in 2015 over two million viewers watched the contest live from Sofia. While last years time slot changes saw the viewing figures slumping to just 280,000 viewers.

This would not be the first time that Bulgaria has withdrawn from the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. Following the 2008 contest Bulgaria withdrew until the 2011 contest in Yerevan, Armenia. They again participated for one year before withdrawing until their return in 2014.

At last years contest in Malta, Bulgaria was represented by Lidia Ganeva with the song “Magical Day” she finished 9th with a total of 161 points.

Bulgaria debuted in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2007. The country has never won the contest, and their best entry comes from 2014, when Krisia, Hasan and Ibrahim and their song “Planet of the Children” placed 2nd with 147 points. Bulgaria then went on to host the 2015 contest, in the capital Sofia. Their worst result was in 2008, when Krestiana Kresteva and her song “Edna Mechta” placed 15th with 15 points. Bulgaria have withdrawn multiple times from the contest, and were absent from 2009-2010, and 2012-2013.

  1. I bet its because the 100% jury voting. Everyone hates that, hopefully EBU will change it.

    1. But here’s the good news: Bulgaria became the runner-up at the adult’s Eurovision Song Contest in Kiev last Saturday! So I Bulgaria will compete at the Junior contest due to the good result in the adult’s version! 😉
