Verka Serduchka is backing Francesco Gabbani of Italy to win the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 with one week to go until the final.
Verka Serduchka Ukraine’s entrant in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 took to the stage in Euroclub last night, delighting the audience of fans. After performing her set, Verka spoke to the press for the first time in four years. In an interview with the Lithuanian national broadcaster, Verka Serduchka said:
I’ve not seen all of them. Somehow, I think he (Francesco Gabbani) will win, it seems to me that it is – the song, (it) is not designed specifically for the competition. There is no need to think about the country. It should just show-off.
Verka Serduchka’s performance last night at Euroclub was a rare performance for the act who has taken a step back from the stage since conflict broke out in the country. However Verka stated that before it is too late they plan to do a worldwide farewell tour.
Who is Verka Serduchka?
Verka Serduchka is a drag character created by Andriy Danylko, Verka is a flamboyant middle aged woman who is regularly joined by her mother. The character was created in the early 1990s and grew to popularity within Ukraine during the late 1990s before touring Eastern Europe in the early 2000s.
In 2007 Verka was selected to represent Ukraine at the Eurovision Song Contest in Helsinki, Finland. She performed the song “Dancing Lasha Tumbai”, an energetic pop song featuring an over the top performance. The song was performed in German, English, Ukrainian, and Russian. It caused controversy for narrowly missing out on victory in the contest, with many Western commentators accusing it of being a joke entry and not in the spirit of the contest.
A total of 42 countries are competing in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kyiv, Ukraine. Returning to the Eurovision stage are Portugal and Romania who both took a year out from the contest. Bosnia & Herzegovina and Russia have however withdrawn from the contest. Bosnia & Herzegovina has withdrawn due to financial difficulties at the national broadcaster, BHRT. While Russia has withdrawn following Julia Samoilova being banned by Ukrainian Authorities from entering Ukraine. The 62nd edition of the Eurovision Song Contest is being held on the following dates:
- Semi Final 1 – 9 May
- Semi Final 2 – 11 May
- Final – 13 May
