Spain: RTVE Film Eurovision Special ‘Manel Navarro & Friends’

RTVE the Spanish national broadcaster has filmed ‘Manel Navarro & Friends’ a TV show featuring Manel Navarro and three other Eurovision participants in Madrid.

Yesterday the Spanish national broadcaster filmed  ‘Manel Navarro & Friends’, featuring Manel Navarro as host and three guest performances from this years contest. The show is styled around interviews between Manel and the Eurovision participants, as well as live performances of each artists song. Appearing as guests at the show were:

  • Finland – Norma John
  • Portugal – Salvador Sobral
  • Serbia – Tijana Bogicevic

The appearance of Salvador Sobral at the show in Madrid is the first time that the Portuguese singer has promoted himself outside of Portugal. The singer is known to be recovering from an operation, which has lead to a decision for Salvador to miss the first rehearsals in Kyiv. Instead the singers sister who wrote the song will stand in for him during the first rehearsals.

No details have been announced so far as to when the show will be broadcast or whether it is an online or televised show.

Manel won the Spanish selection show Objetivo Eurovision 2017 after tying with Mirela, with a total of 54 points each. In the end, the jury controversially had the final say and selected Manel to represent Spain in Kyiv, Ukraine. The final of Objetivo Eurovision 2017 was the least watched Spanish national final for over 10 years, with just 1.449 million viewers watching the show. Viewing figures have been falling annually since over 2.6 million viewers watched the final of the Spanish selection in 2010.

Manel Navarro is 20 years old and first rose to fame regionally when he won Catalunya Teen Star in 2014. In 2015 he signed with Sony Music Spain and went on to go viral on Spotify with the song “Candle”, the song went on to be played over 1 million times.

Spain debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1961 and has competed annually since. Spain has won the contest on two occasions the first being in 1968 and the second time in 1969. 1969 is the only year where more than one song has won the contest, the 1969 contest saw a four way tie between Spain, France, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. Since 2000 Spain has only managed to finish in the top.10 on five occasions, the last time being in 2014 with Ruth Lorenzo. However the country has finished 20th or below on eight occasions, the worst placement being 25th in 2013.
