Tonight, Greece decided that Demy will sing the song “This Is Love” when she represents her country in Kyiv.
Greece had the choice between three songs written especially for Demy to take to the 62nd Eurovision Song Contest in May. In the end, ‘This Is Love’ took the victory and will be the 38th song to represent Greece at the contest.
The three songs competing to represent Greece tonight were:
- ‘Angels’ – written by Dimitris Kontopoulos and Romy Papadea
- ‘This Is Love’ – written by Dimitris Kontopoulos, Romy Papadea and John Ballard
- ‘When the Morning Comes Around’ – written by Dimitris Kontopoulos and John Ballard
The winning song was decided by a 70-30 split between public and jury vote. The jury was made up of nine international juries from countries with a large Greek diaspora. Out of these nine countries – Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Bulgaria, Georgia, Germany, Italy and Ukraine – eight voted for ‘This Is Love’. The only country that didn’t vote for the winning song was Azerbaijan, who favoured ‘When the Morning Comes Around’.
‘This Is Love’ was the only song to be written by all three participating composers, Dimitris Kontopoulos, John Ballard and Romy Papadea. Kontopoulos has previously written six Eurovision entries, all of which placed in the top 10 – Belarus 2007, Ukraine 2008, Greece 2009, Azerbaijan 2013 and Russia 2014 and 2016. His highest placing entry is Azerbaijan’s ‘Hold Me’ which finished in 2nd place in 2013. His most recent entry, Sergey Lazarev’s ‘You Are the Only One’, finished in 3rd last year in Stockholm. John Ballard also worked with Kontopoulos on ‘You Are the Only One’, ‘Hold Me’, and the Tolmachevy Sisters’ ‘Shine’ in 2014. Meanwhile Romy Papadea is Demy’s sister, and has written many of her previous songs. She has also written for the likes of Despina Vandi.
Greece will participate in the first semi-final of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest on 9th May. Demy will hope to take her country through to the final after Argo failed to do so last year. Their song ‘Utopian Land’ finished in 16th in its semi-final in Stockholm.
