Tonight Moldova held their Eurovision selection show O Melodie Pentru Europa 2017, and selected Sunstroke Project as their 2017 entry.
Eight acts battled it out tonight in Moldova for the victory and the grand prize – to represent the country at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017. In the end it was Sunstroke Project that came out on top, and will represent Moldova at this year’s contest with the song “Hey Mamma”. The winner was decided by 50% jury vote and 50% televote. The eight acts that performed tonight were:

- Valeria Pasa – “Freedom”
- Ethno Republic & Surorile Osoianu – “Discover Moldova”
- Marks & Stefanet – “Join us in the rain”
- Aurel Chirtoacă – “Dor de mamă”
- SunStroke Project – “Hey mamma”
- Diana Brescan – “Breath”
- Samir Loghin – “Glow”
Tonight’s final saw the return of SunStroke Project, the Moldovan representatives in 2010 who performed “Run Away” alongside Olia Tira. Their performance is often remembered by their “Epic Sax Guy”, who has become a popular icon amongst Eurovision fan communities. They qualified for the 2010 final in Oslo, Norway and achieved 22nd place with 27 points in the Grand Final.
The final eight artists made it through to the final from a fourteen song semi-final. The qualifiers were also decided by 50% jury vote and 50% televote. Performing at the beginning of the show tonight was last year’s Moldovan entry Lidia Isac. She sung her Eurovision 2016 song “Falling Stars”. Moldova placed 17th last year in the semi-final with 33 points.

Moldova debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2005 when the contest was last held in Kyiv, Ukraine. In 2005 Moldova debuted in the contest alongside Bulgaria, while that year Hungary also returned to the contest having been absent since 1998. Moldova is currently in its worse run of results in their history in the contest, having failed to make the final since 2013. At the 2016 contest in Stockholm, the country finished 17th in their semi-final scoring a total of 33 points.
