Malta has selected Claudia Faniello to represent them at the 62nd edition of the Eurovision Song Contest this May in Kyiv, Ukraine.
Sixteen artists took to the stage tonight at the venue of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2016 tonight in Malta, but only one could win the ticket to Kyiv. The winner of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2017 is Claudia Faniello with the song “Breathlessly”, they won the first final to be decided by the public televote only in recent years.
Hosting the show tonight were TV stars Daniel Azzopardi and Charlene Mercieca. Performing tonight as interval acts were Ira Losco, the Maltese entrant in the Eurovision Song Contest 2002 and 2016. Also on stage was Christina Magrin who represented Malta at last years Junior Eurovision Song Contest, while The Travellers also performed tonight.
For the first time, the winner was decided by a 100% televote, giving the Maltese people a greater say in who will represent them in Kyiv. In previous years the Maltese public has only had a 20% say in who represents them, with a jury made up of Maltese and international members deciding 80% of the results.

Malta debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1971 and was represented by Joe Grech and the song “Marija I-Maltija”, the song finished last. Malta competed again in 1972 and 1975 but withdrew until their return in 1991. During the 1990s Malta only once finished outside of the top.10 and in 1998 they came within just 7 points of victory. It was Chiara who brought the country their 3rd place finish in 1998, that went on to finish 2nd at the 2005 contest in Kyiv. The only other artist to finish 2nd for Malta is Ira Losco, she was 12 points away from victory.
