Switzerland will decide on their entry for Eurovision 2017 this Sunday, and prior to the show Eurovoix have had the opportunity to chat with participant Freschta, who will participate with her song “Gold”. In the interview she discusses the meaning behind “Gold”, the importance of Eurovision to her, and what one object she cherishes most in the world.
Thank you very much for speaking to us Freschta. Can you tell us a bit more about yourself and your journey as a singer so far?
My Name is Freschta and I live in Switzerland. Freschta is a name from Afghanistan and the meaning is “Angel”. For me all started with my participation on The Voice of Switzerland in 2014. I reached the semifinal. After The Voice there were some projects in the music business and a vocational training in the commercial sector. My first application for ESC was in 2015 with 2 songs and now I’m happy that the Swiss jury like my song “Gold”. Furthermore I want to promote my musical career with my first album in 2017.
This isn’t your first time trying to represent Switzerland at the Eurovision Song Contest, what was your motivation this year to take part?
My producer knew that I would like to join ESC and came up with the idea for a new attempt. A friend of mine is Ira May, a successful singer in Switzerland and she wrote the song “Gold” for me.
How would you describe the style of your music and who are your biggest influences?
I love to sing different styles of music. My biggest strength so far are ballads, but my album will be a colourful mixture. I listen to every kind of music, except heavy metal. My favourite singer is Jessie J.
You’ve previously participated in The Voice of Switzerland, has singing always been your passion in life and what does it mean to have this opportunity?
As a child I wanted to become a police officer, I didn’t think I would be a singer. But some years later I discovered my voice and other people liked it too, so then I played around with the idea of becoming a singer and the passion started to grow. Eurovision is a huge opportunity for me to show my voice to the world.
Can you tell us more about the song “Gold” and the message of it?
“Gold” is about love-sickness, the eternal theme for songs. But for me it’s also about music. I missed being on a big stage after The Voice of Switzerland, so I relate this song to music. As I said before, the song was written by Ira May, but I was involved in the development process of the song, so “Gold” is close to my heart.
How would it feel to represent Switzerland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017?
I would feel blessed. It would mean a lot to me to show the world that Switzerland has talented musicians, songwriters and singers that are worth discovering. And I would also like to experience this huge event as a participant.
Now to round off here’s a fun question – if you could only keep one object that you currently own, what would it be and why?
That’s a difficult question. I’m not linked to objects, but strongly connected to people. And my voice isn’t an object… right? Otherwise I would choose my voice.
