YLE the Finnish national broadcaster has launched their search for songs for the Eurovision Song Contest 2018.

The Finnish national broadcaster has opened the first of two submission periods for UMK 2018, the countries selection process for the Eurovision Song Contest 2018. The submissions process is open to three different applicants, singers with a song, singers looking for a song and songwriters who have a song but not a singer. Those wishing to apply to compete in UMK 2017 during this first submissions period have until February 28 to submit their application.

The following rules apply to the selection process:

  • Singers must be at least 16 years old by May 10, 2018
  • At least one singer must be a Finnish citizen or be a permanent resident in Finland
  • Each participant is allowed to submit only one song
  • Submissions must be in a digital format and not by CD
  • The song may not be performed publicly before September 1, 2017

Finland’s confirmation of participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 comes four months ahead of the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 and is the earliest a country has confirmed participation in the following years contest in recent years.

On Saturday night Finland selected Norma John to represent the country at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kyiv, Ukraine. Norma John will be performing the song “Blackbird”, having won both the public vote and the international jury voting by a significant margin. They are hoping to take Finland back to their first Eurovision final since 2014.

Finland first participated in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1961, they debuted alongside Spain and Yugoslavia. Finland has finished last in the contest on 10 occasions and has received nul points three times. It wasn’t until 2006 that Finland won the Eurovision Song Contest, Lordi represented the country in Athens with the song “Hard Rock Hallelujah” scoring 292 points a record total at the time. Finland last performed in the final in 2014 when Softengine finished 11th with the song “Something Better”.
