Macedonia has announced that it is to be represented by Jana Burčeska at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kyiv, Ukraine.

MRT of Macedonia has internally selected Jana Burčeska to represent Macedonia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kyiv. Macedonia has confirmed that it is internally selecting their song for the contest creating a song which is modern and incorporates the national culture of Macedonia to be showcased on the European stage.

Jana Burčeska rose to prominence in Macedonia having finished 5th in the first series of Macedonian Idol. In 2011 Jana took on the role of ambassador in the campaign of UNICEF joint national campaign project – “Together for Schools without Violence”. In 2012 She debuted on stage in Skopje Fest with the song “Bi bila tvoja”. She went on to compete in Skopje Fest again in 2013 alongside Miki Sekulovsk, she returned again in 2015.

Jana has stated in previous interviews that her passion for singing began at the age of four with her mother. It was at this point that her vocal talent was recognised by her music teacher who decided that she should go for singing lessons. During her time on the Idol Jana said that she grew as a performer, she had gone into the competition of no expectations of reaching the top five.

Macedonia has had a string of poor results in recent years failing to reach the final every year since 2012. This year they were represented by Kaliopi for a second time with the song “Dona”, she missed out on the final finishing in 11th in her semi final. Macedonia’s best result to date is a 12th place finish in the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest represented by Elena Risteska and the song “Ninanajna”.

The date of the reveal of the Macedonian entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 will be announced in the coming months.
