Krista Siegfrids, the 2013 representative of Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest, will once again host YLE’s national selection show; Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu, the show used to select Finland’s entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. Last year, whilst hosting Finland’s national final, Krista also attempted to represent Sweden, finishing fifth in the second semi-final with “Faller”.
Last year’s second place entrant and fan favourite, Sara Aalto, is currently fighting to keep her position in the British version of the X Factor. Often facing elimination, hanging on in the final seven, Sara has been saved by the show’s judges on three occasions as she repeatedly fell into the bottom two position over five weeks. Next week the show goes to full public vote as each contestant performs not one, but two songs – tonight, however, Sara will perform “No More Tears” (Enough is Enough) as she attempts to triumph once more in disco week.
Since YLE, the Finnish national broadcasters, took up the particularly well-regarded show format in 2012, winners of the show have only successfully reached the Eurovision final on two occasions. Last year’s winner, Sandhja, finished in fifteenth place during the first semi-final.
Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu will take place on January 28th as the three semi-final rounds have now been scrapped.

Finland will be holding a one show national selection, with the final being held on 28 January in Espoo. 10 songs will be competing in the final of UMK 2017 to represent Finland at the 62nd edition of the Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv, Ukraine. UMK which was held for the first time in 2012 has traditionally consisted of three semi-finals and a final, however, for 2017 it has been decided to cut it down to a one show selection. This is not the first time that UMK has undergone changes to its format since it was first held. Previously introductory shows were held in December and January to reveal the participants in the selection process. While in 2015 it was announced that the panel of judges who previously had voiced their views on each of the performances were retired from the show. The participants in UMK 2017 are set to be announced on November 23.
