The Head of the Ukrainian national broadcaster, Zurab Alasania has resigned in protest to the Government’s budget for the broadcaster in 2017.
Mr Zurab Alasania the Head of the Ukrainian national broadcaster, Zurab Alasania has resigned. Mr Alasania is resigning in protest the budget that has been allocated to NTU for 2017. For 2017 the Ukrainian Government has allocated €42.8 million, of which €16 million will be spent on Eurovision, €8.9 on transmission fees, €5.3 million on taxes, €1.6 million in utility bills and €4 million on international events such as World Championships. That leaves the broadcaster with €7 million Euros with which to restructure the broadcaster.
Mr Alasania has been crucial in removing state and private interference from the broadcaster and trying to establish an effective public service broadcaster. The former Head of NTU added that he hopes that he can bring attention to the problems with the budget of Eurovision 2017 and the public broadcasters future. He added that the new Head of the broadcaster will be appointed by the Ukrainian Government.
