For the first time ever the number of streams a song receives on Spotify will be used as part of the voting method for a Eurovision national selection.
LTV the Latvian national broadcaster has announced that they are working with Spotify and Universal Music to bring this new voting method into fruition. For the first time ever in a national selection process Spotify will be used as a measure in deciding the votes. This is not the first time that Spotify has been used to determine voting on a song contest, the method is currently being used on a Norwegian television series.
Ilze Jansone the Head of Supernova stated that:
Consequently, Spotify involvement in the competition, we have the opportunity to reach new audiences, and to include the voting results in real data from music consumers
Petri Manonens from Universal Music added:
The more you have listened to a song Spotify streaming platform, the more it is likely to become a hit. It’s a fact
Also announced today were the member of the international jury for Supernova, they are:
- Petri Mannonen – Universal Music (Finland)
- Matthias Müller – BMG Rights Management and Crazy Planet Records (Germany)
- Fruzsina Szép – Lollapalooza Berlin (Germany)
- Joy Deb – Songwriter for the winning song of the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 “Heroes” (Sweden)

Just a little correction – members of the jury, which will choose song for Supernova, are already announced back in August. 😉
