The representative of the Vatican has stepped into to quell misreporting that the Vatican is intervening in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017.
The representative of the Vatican (Holy See) in Ukraine has issued a statement regarding misreporting that the Vatican is intervening in the venue for the Eurovision 2017. Reports in the Russian and Ukrainian media stated that the Vatican had spoken out about construction next to the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Greek Catholic Church next to the Eurovision 2017 venue.
In a statement the Vatican’s representative said that:
No body of the Holy See officially or secretly intervened in the matter of the organization of the Eurovision Song Contest 2017, while being aware about this issue and sharing the concerns of the believers. Hence, these publications have no grounds.
The representative added that construction near the Cathedral must be stopped if it is illegal, that the matter was down to the city of Kyiv to resolve. A representative of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church added that:
UGCC did not apply, and could not turn to Pope Francis about the illegal construction, which is carried out in Kyiv. Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church is not a party to the conflict between the developer and the local community, but as a part of the community, in favor of the rule of law and respect for the religious feelings of believers.
