ORF the national broadcaster of Austria is in discussions with the EBU regarding participating in the new Eurovision format, “Choir of the Year”.
The Austrian national broadcaster has confirmed to Eurovoix.com that they are in discussions with the European Broadcasting Union about participation in Choir of the Year 2017. Austria has a long history of participating and host Eurovision produced formats. The country participated in the first edition of Eurovision Young Musicians in 1982 and has hosted the contest six times, they also participated in both editions of the Eurovision Dance Contest.
Austria has experience hosting choir events with ORF broadcasting and licensing a highly successful choir contest format “Österreich Singt”. Furthermore it hosted “Europe Sings” a choir concert bringing together eight amateur choirs to mark 100 years since the start of World War One. The concert was broadcast by; Austria (ORF), Bulgaria (BNT), Croatia (HRT), Finland (YLE), France (France Televisions), Germany (WDR), Latvia (LTV) and Lithuania (LRT).
Choir of the Year 2017 will be confirmed as being held by the European Broadcasting Union on November 30th, subject to sufficient interest from broadcasters. To date the only country confirmed as participating in the event is the host nation of Latvia.
