A total of 2,478 songs have been submitted to SVT, all hoping to compete in Melodifestivalen 2017.
The number of submissions overall is up by 28 songs over 2016, but is still 1,400 songs lower than 2011 when 3,832 songs were submitted. This year a total of 362 songs were submitted through the public contest, this was for singers or songwriters who had not released a song commercially before. This figure is the lowest it has been since the public were given a separate round in 2010.
SVT also announced today that Karin Gunnarsson is the new Chairman of the selection Jury, and Deputy Contest Producer for Melodifestivalen 2017. She told SVT that:
New artists, songs and sound are a never ending source which year after year continues to fascinate and interest me. It is a privilege to work and share it to a large and enthusiastic audience. I’m incredibly proud to be a part of SVT and Melodifestivalen.
Karin has worked at Sveriges Radio P3 as music editor for over ten years with music-related projects P3 Gold, Musikhjälpen and P3 Love tour. Karin was first on the jury that selects the 24 songs for Melodifestivalen in 2013, and has participated in the jury every year since.
To date Les Gordons are the only known participants in Melodifestivalen 2017. The group received a direct invitation to the contest having participated in Svensktoppen nästa 2016. The names of the other participants and their songs will be revealed in the autumn.
