RTS the national broadcaster of Serbia has confirmed that they will be participating in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2016 in Malta.

Serbia’s confirmation in this years contest comes amid tabloid speculations as to who the country has selected to represent them in Malta. has reported that Mateja Vukašinović a finalist in the first season of “Pinkove zvezdice” has been selected to represent Serbia. The 14-year-old singer has reportedly already started rehearsals for the contest and is said to be excited at the prospect of representing his country.

However RTS the Serbian national broadcaster has in a statement denied that Mateja has been selected for Junior Eurovision 2016. Duška Vučinić informed that:

We have not yet defined the way we elect the representatives for this year’s competition.

In both 2015 and 2014, Serbia opted to internally select both the singer and the song that represented them in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. In 2015 Serbia was represented by Lena Stamenković with the song “Lenina Pesma” (Lena’s song), she finished 7th with a total of 79 points, she received 12 points from both Montenegro and Macedonia.

To date a total of 16 countries have confirmed their participation in this years Junior Eurovision Song Contest. Both Cyprus and Poland are returning to the contest having both not competed in last years contest in Bulgaria. While Montenegro, San Marino and Slovenia have opted not to compete in this years contest in Malta. TVM this years host broadcaster had stated that a total of 18 countries would compete in this years contest. Israel is the only country to publicly state that they may return this year.

  1. OK. Only 2 countries to go. We need France to return and Germany to debut to complete the country list of the JESC this year.

  2. That’s great. However, I’m still waiting for te following countries to automatically announce their representatives:

    * Australia
    * Cyprus
    * Georgia

    I’m also waiting for TG4 to reveal the rest of the candidates for Ireland’s national selection. Furthermore, I understand why some people want more boys in the contest. #KeepYourEyesPeeled 🙂

  3. I am from Serbia and I am very happy about our participation, but I think that Mateja couldn’t participate because he will be 15 in November (I am not sure when is his birthday)

  4. So far it’s not a win for the EBU, three countries are out since last year. But that may change over time…
