The Irish Independent is reporting that former Westlife member Nicky Byrne is to represent Ireland at the 61st Eurovision Song Contest.
The newspaper reports that RTÉ has internally selected the singer to represent Ireland in Stockholm this May. Nicky Byrne has been involved with the Eurovision Song Contest for a number of years now having been the spokesperson for the country since 2013. It has been reported by The Dubliner that the singer has returned to the studio to record new music.
RTÉ issued a statement to the Irish Independent saying:
RTÉ will be making an announcement regarding our selection process later this month – all details will appear onin due course.
If Nicky Byrne is internally selected it will be the first time since 2007 that Ireland has used an internal selection to pick the singer. In 2007 Dervish were selected by RTE to represent Ireland in Helsinki, they finished last in the final.
