BNT has confirmed today that at this stage they will not be participating in the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest.
BNT has emphasised that they would like to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest however that the event is currently unaffordable. They are hoping there is a possibility that they will take part and are still trying to get a budget together, the aim is to hope that Junior Eurovision will be able to get the funds together. BNT’s hosting of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest has mainly relied upon a special grant from the Bulgarian Government.
In an interview with ESCDaily.com the Head of Delegation for Bulgaria, Joana Levieva-Sawyer said that:
In the last few years we have not participated in the big Eurovision due to budgetary reasons….the Eurovision Song Contest has become really expensive event to take part in. We are not the only EBU member that has a problem entering and taking part because of the enormous cost.
She went on to say that:
We are still trying to put up a budget with the help of an independent producer, but so far we have not gathered the budget, so we are officially not participating yet.
If Junior Eurovision helps with the budget, we may consider it and we may enter, but I’m not sure it will be possible as the deadline has already passed.
