Gibraltar: No Plans To Broadcast Eurovision

GBC Will Not Broadcast The Contest

Gibraltar has no plans to broadcast this years Eurovision Song Contest live from Vienna, Austria.

Gibraltar the British Overseas Territory located on the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula has confirmed to Eurovoix.com that they have no plans to broadcast Eurovision 2015. Gibraltar is served by its national broadcaster the Gibraltar Broadcasting Corportation.

GBC told us that:

We currently do not have plans to broadcast the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest on GBC.   GBC is not a member of the European Broadcasting Union, for which Gibraltar cannot take part, which reduces the requirement for GBC to broadcast it.   In any event, broadcasting such events carries significant costs, which at present we cannot meet.

It was reported in 2008 that the contest was broadcast by Gibraltar. Furthermore there is precedent for the contest to be broadcast by non-EBU members in the case of Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Kazakhstan.

  1. Hang on… Can areas such as Gibraltar, Faroe Islands and Greenland take part if they have an EBU membership?

      1. No, they would have to gain independence from the countries which legally have control over them. So for Greenland and the Faroe Islands they would have to become independent of the Danish Realm to take part in the contest.

  2. There is no point Gibraltar broadcasting Eurovision, when in Gibraltar people can watch Eurovision on BBC1 or spanishChannel TVE1 so theres no point.
