TVNZ the national broadcaster of New Zealand has confirmed to us today that they have no intention of participating in the ABU TV Song Festival. New Zealand has never participated in the contest, however due to Australia’s participation in the contest has been expected to take part in the future.
It is not known exactly what is stopped New Zealand from taking part, however it is thought that due to its non-competitive nature the viewing figures would not be sufficient to gain the interest of viewers in New Zealand.

It is clear that in order to gain popularity, this event should be competitive. Last year, there were rumors that the ABU was working to turn the ATSF into a song contest.
Maybe they are still thinking about how the winners must be elected or how much countries should take part. Anyway, this event is still very young and there is still many things to improve.
If Eurovision is very popular in Australia and New Zealand well then surely ATSF will be.
