The EBU and ORF have today announced the launch of a brand new pan-European musical production, Europe Sings. The show brings together Europe’s best amateur choirs to Vienna on May 9th to perform in front of millions.
The live event takes the place in Vienna at the Rathausplatz. Each choir will perform a piece which has a national flavour to it, and then stay on stage to perform together popular choral songs. Between the performances the signature Eurovision postcards will be shown for each country.
The event does not have a competitive element to it on the night, however the choirs taking part may have been involved in televised national selection process’. The Head of Television for the EBU, Bettina Brinkman said that:
In creating Europe Sings, EUROVISION has helped transform a successful national format into a unique international format. We’re proud and excited to launch a new live show on the eve of one of our best loved co-productions, the EUROVISION Song Content. Europe Sings serves as an example of great TV programming that can only take place within the framework of an international co-production.
The format that Europe Sings is based upon is the ORF created “Osterreich Singt” (Austria Sings) which is now in its 4th year.
The countries and choirs that will take part are:
- Austria (ORF) – Coro Siamo
- Bulgaria (BNT) – Mixed Choir of Bulgarian National Radio
- Croatia (HRT) – Concordia Discors
- Finland (YLE) – Euga Male Voice Choir
- France (France Televisions) – La Maîtrise de Paris
- Germany (ARD/WDR) – Vox Bona
- Latvia (LTV) – Sōla
- Lithuania (LRT) – Liepaitės
