Will Russia Be In Malta?
Will Russia Be In Malta?

Russia’s participation in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2014 looks in doubt after a dramatic fall in viewing figures. The contest in 2013 was moved to the children’s channel Carousel after years of it being shown on Russia-1.

The viewing figures for the 2013 contest slipped to just 0.8% rating/0.3% share of the Russian viewing public. This makes it the worst year to date for Russian views in the contest. You can see the historical statistics (source: esckaz) below:

  • 2012 – 12.3%/2.6%
  • 2011 – 13.2%/3.5%
  • 2010 – 13%/3.6%
  • 2009 – 22.1%/7.3%
  • 2008 – 19.2%/4.9%
  • 2007 + 1 million
  • 2006 – 4.45 million 27.4%/6.2%
  • 2005 – 4,083,400

The statistics show that around 129,000 people watched the contest live in Russia, which is just 8,000 more than in Sweden which is typically one of the smaller markets for the contest in recent years. The dramatic fall in viewing figures is likely to trigger questions about whether the move to the children’s channel was the correct thing for Russia to do and whether Russia will continue to take part in the contest.

  1. YES YES YES!!!!!! I Couldn’t be more happy if they do, can’t them and Azerbaijan they consider withdrawing from the ESC too former ussr block would be suppressed!

    1. However I do admit Russia and Azerbaijan can provide us with some of the best entries in Eurovision recently, I’ve been fed up of the constant block voting and favouring of neighbouring countries getting their top scores, I was carrying out some research and analysing all the points: Russia, Moldova, Lithuania, Latvia, Georgia, Ukraine, Belarus and Armenia have been awarding each over in the JESC, some countries where worse than others, but it was sad to see when there was years western countries and former yugoslavic ones have delivered but these countries haven’t been fairly rewarded in points from the former ussr block.

    2. Yes but you Must know it’s Russia (Biggest country in the World and an important participant for keep going Jesc)

  2. Katherine Lockett has said that yesterday at an EBU meeting she heard them talking about moving JESC back to the main channel. 🙂

    1. Thats a relief 🙂 I take back what I said about wanting to see Russia withdraw, if they did it would only just add to it dying out, we can’t let the JESC die.
