Gaia Brings Home Malta’s First Ever Win!

Malta have won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2013! This means that Malta have won their first ever Eurovision Song Contest. Gaia won with her balled “The Start”, it becomes the first song that has won Junior Eurovision that has ever been performed full in English as well. Gaia scored a total of 130 points, in what was a nail biting finish for the contest.

The results were up to the final country Russia, Malta needed just 6 points to win the contest. Russia gave no points to Ukraine up until 8 points, this meant that if Malta received no points they would have lost by 1 point, then Malta gets 10 points from Russia, declaring them the winner. At the last minute 12 points to Belarus knocked them off of the podium.

  4. Russia – 106 points
  5. Georgia – 91 points
  6. Armenia – 69 points
  7. Azerbaijan – 66 points
  8. Netherlands – 59 points
  9. Sweden – 46 points
  10. San Marino -42 points
  11. Moldova – 41 points
  12. FYR Macedonia – 19 points

Gaia told the press after she won that she was phoned by the Prime Minister of Malta to congratulate her on being the first Maltese person to ever win a Eurovision event.

Ruslana the winner of Eurovision 2004 was due to perform in the contest doing a dance routine. However she pulled out at the last minute to join the protests in Kiev against the Government’s decision to not forge closer ties with the European Union.
