Buranovskiye Babushki have accomplished their goal that has been the inspiration behind their attempts at Eurovision participation. The six grannies from Buranovo in Russia wanted to take part in the contest to raise enough money for a church to be built-in their village. There has not been a church in the village since the former church was demolished during the Soviet era, they currently worship in a shop that has been converted into a prayer room.
“We were once again talking with the grannies that a church would be nice and all of sudden the phone rung and there was a rich business man offering a lot of money for a gig. We thought it was a sign. We decided to sing us a church and now after five years we have collected enough money and the building will start in May!” says Olga Tuktareva.
Buranovskiye Babushki will take part in the first semi final on the 22nd of May in slot number 14 with their song “Party for Everybody”. The Grannies are currently 2nd favourite to win the contest in may behind Sweden.
