TRT the national broadcaster of Turkey have today announced that they are creating a brand new annual song contest named “Turkvision”. The contest will see 20 competing countries and autonomous regions that have Turkish links such as the Republic of Tataristan in Russia or the Republic of Crimea in Ukraine.
The contest was launched today with much fanfare, former Eurovision winners Eldar & Nigar from Azerbaijan spoke at the launch ceremony. The first contest will be held this December in Eskişehir in Turkey. The concept of the contest is the same as Eurovision, with participating regions and countries sending songs to win the contest.
Education Minister Nabi Avci who signed off on the creation of the contest said:
Turkvision does not need to be compared to Eurovision. It will have its place in the Turkic world with its own brand value. Whether we participate or not in Eurovision, I hope that Turkvision will move forward in its own path, growing and expanding year-by-year
The dates of the contest are:
- Semi Final 1 – December 19
- Semi Final 2 – December 21
- Final – December 23
The Semi Final’s appear to be split into two 10 country shows with 6 countries qualifying from each.
